Corberan is gone. The dressing room wanted a name. It arrived on Tuesday: Javier Aguirre.
The Mexican walks into a club in crisis. 19th in La Liga. One win, one draw, five defeats. The kind of record that gets you nowhere fast. The club had torn up Corberan’s contract ten days earlier and still had not lined up a replacement.
Aguirre knows the place. He has already coached in Spain, at Osasuna, Atletico, Zaragoza, Espanyol, Leganes and Mallorca. He is a familiar face in La Liga dressing rooms and has been for more than 15 years. His standout achievement remains guiding Osasuna into Europe, a rare feat for the Navarre club.

The club statement was brief: Valencia CF have reached an agreement with Javier Aguirre to become the new head coach of the first team. No big speech. No grand promise. Just a contract through to the end of the season, with an option for another year if survival is secured.
Aguirre led Mexico to the World Cup finals three times, in 2002, 2010 and 2016. That last campaign ended with a last-16 exit. He has also managed clubs and national teams in Japan, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt. It is the sort of career that shows he can adapt quickly, wherever he lands.
The schedule leaves no breathing room
No time to settle in. No break to take stock. Aguirre has to deliver points, and quickly, before the gap to safety becomes too much for Valencia.
