Chicago Bears vs New York Jets: a backup quarterback, a banged-up visitor and a 3.5-point line
Chicago were priced much higher before Caleb Williams injured his hamstring. With their starting quarterback still not practicing, the Bears now lay only 3.5 points at home, and that shift defines the analysis.
The Chicago Bears host the New York Jets on Sunday 4 October at Soldier Field, in Week 4 of the NFL season. Kick-off is at 1:00 p.m. ET, which means 19:00 Paris time.
Chicago are 2-1 after a 27-7 win over Philadelphia, a result achieved with Case Keenum under center. New York are 1-2 after a 31-24 loss in Detroit.
The spread sits at Chicago -3.5 with a total of 43.5. On the moneyline, the Bears are at 1.57 and the Jets at 2.45.
The quarterback picture in Chicago is unresolved. Tyson Bagent has cleared the concussion protocol and is reportedly trending toward the start, although Keenum played well in Week 3.
New York’s injury list carries just as much weight. Several skill-position players and a starting guard missed practice on both Wednesday and Thursday.
Soldier Field adds a final variable. It is one of the league’s more weather-sensitive venues, and wind will need checking before kick-off.
Chicago Bears Analysis
The 27-7 win over Philadelphia was one of the biggest surprises of Week 3. It showed the Bears can survive without Caleb Williams, at least for one game.
Keenum was the starter that night. Now Bagent, cleared from the concussion protocol, appears set to take the job back, which adds an element of uncertainty to the offense.
Whoever starts, the game plan is predictable. Chicago have every reason to protect a backup quarterback with a defense-first approach, a committed rushing attack and quick throws.
That approach limits the scoring ceiling. A team built to manage the game rarely produces the kind of margin needed to cover more than a field goal comfortably.
Laying points with a backup-quarterback offense is the core problem. The Philadelphia result was impressive, yet asking for a repeat performance by more than 3.5 points is a significant demand.

New York Jets Analysis
Geno Smith gives New York the most established quarterback likely to play in this game. He threw for 321 yards and three touchdowns in the loss at Detroit.
The supporting cast is the concern. Breece Hall, Adonai Mitchell, Mason Taylor and guard Dylan Parham all missed Wednesday and Thursday practice.
Without Hall at full strength, the Jets lose their best answer to light boxes. That makes Chicago’s pass rush more dangerous, because New York would become more predictable on early downs.
The defense brings better news. Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick returned to full participation, which strengthens the back end against a Chicago offense that relies on short, controlled throws.
The Jets defense has been competitive enough to keep games close. Even the Detroit loss was a one-score game, decided by seven points.
New York’s best route mirrors Chicago’s. With its own injuries, the Jets have little reason to raise the pace, which points toward a lower-possession contest.
Probable lineup Chicago Bears: QB Tyson Bagent (cleared concussion protocol, trending toward the start) or Case Keenum; QB Caleb Williams out of practice (hamstring). Full depth chart not announced at time of publication.
Probable lineup New York Jets: QB Geno Smith; S Minkah Fitzpatrick (full practice); RB Breece Hall, WR Adonai Mitchell, TE Mason Taylor and G Dylan Parham uncertain after missing Wednesday and Thursday practice. Full depth chart not announced at time of publication.
Free NFL Prediction: Chicago Bears vs New York Jets
Our prediction: New York Jets +3.5 (handicap) @ 1.87
The hook above three is the decisive element. Chicago are operating without their starting quarterback and with an unresolved backup decision, which makes a win by four points or more a demanding target.
Both previews consulted this week favor New York on the spread, one at +3 and the other at +3.5 alongside a projected 21-19 Chicago win. A three-point Bears victory, the most common margin in tight NFL games, still lands this ticket.
The risk lies in the Jets’ skill-position absences and the chance of turnovers creating short fields. With both offenses likely to play conservatively, a one-score game is the most logical script, and New York plus 3.5 covers it.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses, that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation, that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
