Trailing 2-1, the U.S. flips the match
The U.S. men’s national team beat Chile 4-2 in a friendly on Tuesday night, climbing out of a 2-1 hole after a disjointed start. Sebastian Berhalter scored in the 37th minute, Julian Hall followed in the 51st, Chris Richards added a third in the 72nd, and Mathis Albert completed the scoring. Diego Ulloa and Maximiliano Gutierrez (49th minute) got the goals for Chile.
The early going was rough. The Americans managed only three shots in the opening 35 minutes, and Mauricio Pochettino’s youth-heavy side, which includes six players who have earned their first caps this year, looked fragile at the back.

Berhalter and Hall carry the load
Berhalter finished with a goal and an assist and now has four goals and two assists in his last five games for club and country. Pochettino singled him out afterward. “The energy and the commitment and everything that he does is for the badge, for the national team, for the teammates,” the coach said. “To have a player like him is priceless.”
Hall now has two goals in two appearances for the national team. He took three of the team’s five first-half shots. Gio Reyna steadied the midfield, recording nearly 60 touches in 71 minutes, creating five chances, adding an assist and winning four of six duels.
The back line still has questions
Not everything worked. Center backs Neil Pierre and Miles Robinson looked unsteady at times, and Chile found the net twice. Substitute Alex Freeman offered a more encouraging look late on.
