Schlittler sets the tone in the Bronx
Cam Schlittler did the heavy lifting at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees right-hander struck out eight Red Sox hitters through five innings on 89 pitches, and New York turned that start into a 2-0 win in Game 1 of the wild-card series overnight.
First pitch came at 8:15 p.m. ET. By the time Schlittler finished his fifth inning, Boston still had nothing on the scoreboard, and the Yankees had just enough offense to keep it that way.

Wells and Rice supply the runs
New York scratched out the first run in the second inning. Austin Wells singled through the right side and George Lombard Jr. came home, which made it 1-0.
Ben Rice doubled the lead in the fifth. He drove a pitch from Red Sox left-hander Erik Miller deep to dead center for a home run, and two runs proved to be all the Yankees needed.
One win from the next round
The Yankees now lead the series 1-0. In a best-of-three format, a win in Game 2 sends them into the division series, while Boston has to answer immediately to stay alive. The Red Sox offense managed no runs against Schlittler and the Yankees bullpen, which leaves them with plenty to fix before the next game.
