Jalen Duren isn’t showing up. Detroit’s All-Star center will skip Monday’s media day and the opening of training camp, according to ESPN, as his contract standoff with the Pistons drags into its final stretch. He has until Thursday to sign the one-year, $9.6 million qualifying offer the team put on the table, or watch his restricted free agency stretch even further into the unknown.
The strange part is the money isn’t really the fight anymore. Detroit offered a five-year deal worth $200 million, fully guaranteed. Duren wants something closer to the $287 million max he’s eligible for. That gap matters, but people close to the situation say the real issue now is how the negotiations have been handled. Duren reportedly feels disrespected by an organization he helped drag back into relevance.

The Numbers Behind the Standoff
It’s easy to see why Duren thinks he’s earned the bigger number. He averaged 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds last season across all 70 games he played, all starts, and picked up his first All-Star nod along with a spot on the All-NBA third team. Since Detroit took him 13th overall in the 2022 draft, he has posted 13.5 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists a game over 276 career appearances, 239 of them as a starter.
Those numbers put him firmly in the conversation with the league’s better young centers, which is exactly why a $200 million offer, in most other years, would have been an easy yes. This year, it isn’t. Duren was also a central piece when Detroit pushed Cleveland to a Game 7 in the second round last spring, the kind of playoff run that made his next contract a talking point across the league well before this standoff went public.
What’s Next for Detroit
Thursday’s deadline puts real pressure on both sides. If Duren signs the qualifying offer instead of a long-term deal, he becomes an unrestricted free agent next summer, a scenario that would leave Detroit without its starting center and without much to show for it beyond a one-year rental. Camp opens without him for now, and every day that passes without a signature makes the Pistons’ front office look a little more exposed.
