Illawarra has started NBL27 with two road defeats: 95-81 against the Breakers and 103-95 in Brisbane on Friday. Sunday brings a third straight game away from home.
Two losses do not define a season, but the details are worrying. The Hawks trailed Brisbane all night, fell behind by as many as 18 points and conceded more than 100.
The start of games has also been a problem. Illawarra missed all five of its three-point attempts in the first quarter in Brisbane and trailed 50-42 at half-time, which forced the team to chase for the rest of the night.
The free-throw line hurt them badly in Brisbane. They missed eight consecutive attempts at one stage and finished 5 of 14, according to the league’s match report.
Tyler Harvey led the way with 20 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists, and Milton Doyle added 16 points and 5 assists. Johny Narkle produced his best NBL game with 15 points, while Sam Froling posted 10 points and 10 rebounds in his 200th game.
Davo Hickey chipped in 11 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks, so the production is spread across the roster. The issue is less about talent and more about consistency on defence and at the line.
There is some fight in this group, as Kelan Martin’s corner three cut the gap to one point with 2:30 to play in Brisbane. The Hawks also confirmed the departure of import Darius Days this week, so the rotation remains unsettled heading into a very tough assignment.
For coach Justin Tatum, the priority will be to protect the ball and keep the game slow. Any sloppy possession against a rested Sydney side is likely to turn into points in transition, the exact type of game the Hawks cannot afford.
