Adelaide 36ers vs Cairns Taipans: a Sunday reset for Bryce Cotton’s side 
The Adelaide 36ers welcome the Cairns Taipans to the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on Sunday 27 September, with tip-off set for 8h00 Paris time. This fixture closes the weekend for both clubs and gives each of them a chance to reach two wins after two very different opening weeks.
We are only in Round 2 of NBL27, so every result still carries a lot of weight in how a team is perceived. Adelaide and Cairns both sit at one win and one loss, and a second victory would put the winner among the early front-runners.
Adelaide opened the season by edging Melbourne United 97-95, then lost 98-97 in Perth on a buzzer-beater from Elijah Pepper. Cairns went the other way round: a 111-90 defeat in Sydney followed by a 93-87 home win over the Tasmania JackJumpers.
These two sides have not met yet this season, so there is no NBL27 head-to-head result to lean on. The best reading comes from how each team has handled pressure, travel and rotation in its first two outings.
Scheduling matters here as well. Adelaide last played on Thursday night in Perth and returns home, while Cairns played at home on Wednesday and now makes the long trip from Far North Queensland to South Australia.
That angle points toward the home side. Adelaide has been competitive in both of its games against quality opponents, while Cairns has already shown how quickly its level can swing within a single contest.
Adelaide 36ers Analysis 
Adelaide’s record reads 1-1, but the two games tell a clear story about this group. They beat Melbourne United by two points on opening night and were three points up in Perth with eight seconds left before Pepper’s shot dropped.
In practical terms, the 36ers have been within one possession of a 2-0 start. A team that stays that close against Melbourne and Perth, both on the road, usually has the structure to handle a visitor at home.
Coach Trevor Gleeson was not happy with the Perth performance, calling it a backwards step in his post-game comments to NBL.com.au. His main complaint was that the offence kept going back to one player instead of moving the ball, and he admitted he left his star on the floor too long.
That star is Bryce Cotton, who scored 37 points with 9 assists and 4 steals in Perth and currently leads the league at 33 points per game. The positive detail is that all five Adelaide starters finished in double figures that night, so the supporting cast is producing even when the ball sticks.
The injury list is the main concern: Flynn Cameron (ankle), Isaac Humphries (knee) and Bul Kuol (ACL) are all sidelined according to the league. Even without them, a more balanced offence at home, the adjustment Gleeson asked for, would make Adelaide very hard to stop.
Gleeson himself said he expects the team to be stronger together and to iron out bad habits. A home game against an opponent that gives up points is the ideal setting to put that message into practice.

Cairns Taipans Analysis 
Cairns also sits at 1-1 after a heavy 111-90 loss to the defending champion Sydney Kings and a 93-87 win over Tasmania. The Tasmania game was their first home appearance of NBL27 at the Cairns Convention Centre.
That win showed both sides of this team inside forty minutes. The Taipans hit 7 of 9 threes in the first quarter and led by 20, then went 6 of 24 from the field in the second quarter as Tasmania cut the gap to 45-44 at half-time.
The shooting eventually carried them, with Cairns finishing 14 of 32 from three and getting up ten more shots than their opponent. Their defence was less convincing, allowing a 28-9 run late in the first half and conceding 111 points in Sydney a few days earlier.
Kyrin Galloway was the difference late with 19 points on 5 of 7 from deep, including three triples in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter. Jaylon Brown added 20 points, Jack McVeigh 17 and Malique Lewis a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double.
The challenge now is a road trip to the south of the country after a midweek home game. A team that relies this much on hot perimeter spells can struggle to reproduce them away from home, and that is the key question for Cairns on Sunday.
Guarding Cotton will also demand a lot from the Cairns backcourt. If the Taipans commit extra defenders to him, Adelaide’s other starters have already shown in Perth that they can punish that choice.
