MLB: Rasmussen Fuels Rays’ AL East Title Run

Two strikeouts from history

Drew Rasmussen came within two strikeouts of his career best on Tuesday night, and the Rays didn’t need him to reach it. Six and two-thirds innings, one hit allowed, eleven strikeouts, and a 6-1 win over the Yankees in New York sealed Tampa Bay’s AL East crown.

Rasmussen carried a no-hitter into the seventh before Heliot Ramos broke it up with a double. George Lombard Jr followed with an RBI, the only run New York would score all night. The right-hander moved to 16-5 on the season, stretching his winning streak in starts to 12.

Yandy Diaz drove in four runs, delivering the key hits in both the seventh and ninth innings. New York got on the board first, in the third, on a Ryan Vilade groundout. Things went the other way for Max Fried, who allowed four runs on six hits across 6 2/3 innings and dropped to 5-5 on the year.
