Díaz, Núñez, Gakpo, Mac Allister. Four names, one recruitment chief. Liverpool could now be about to hand the keys back to the man who brought them in.
The Athletic reported on Tuesday evening, with Foot Mercato picking up the story, that Julian Ward is in line to return as the Reds’ sporting director. Nothing has been signed off yet.
The vacancy opened when Richard Hughes left for Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia. Ward, 45, has sat in that chair before. He ran the department through the 2022-23 season.

He never really left
Ward stayed inside the Liverpool orbit after his first spell ended. He currently works as technical director at Fenway Sports Group, the club’s owners. So this would be less of a comeback and more of a short walk down the corridor.
His track record in the transfer market is exactly what Anfield wants right now, with the backroom crying out for a steady hand.
Musical chairs at the top
The churn above the dressing room has been relentless. Michael Edwards, the club’s CEO of football, is gone too. FSG has also sold close to 40% of its stake to a consortium that counts Jeff Bezos among its backers.
Handing Ward the job would keep a direct line to the owners who have run the club for over a decade. Liverpool haven’t said a word yet.
