With 61 points scored, La Rochelle have the 11th-best attack in the league. Only Stade Francais, Vannes and Racing 92 have posted fewer since the season began.
That lack of firepower explains the complete absence of bonus points: zero from three rounds. Both of La Rochelle’s wins came without ever blowing the opposition away.
The other side of that coin is a sturdy defence, with just 67 points conceded. Only Montpellier, UBB and Stade Toulousain have done better in the top flight.
Round three showed the problem in blunt fashion: beaten 10-20 at home by Racing 92, La Rochelle managed only 10 points against the league’s 12th-best defence. Hard to ignore, hard to excuse.
Their negative points difference of -6 reflects the inability to turn territory into points. Right now, the club from the coast are getting by on one leg.
The trip to the Hameau could hardly come at a worse time for a side short on attacking rhythm. Against the league’s second-best attack, the margin for error is tiny.
La Rochelle still sit eighth, just one point off sixth-place Bayonne. The middle of the table is already being decided by the smallest margins after only three rounds.
With 61 points scored, La Rochelle are the only side in the top eight still below 70 in attack. Every team above them has passed 85.
Both of their wins have come without an attacking bonus point, which tells its own story. La Rochelle win by attrition, or they do not win at all.
