Fifth pitch of the game, base hit
Drew Gilbert did not wait around. Five pitches into the night he had a knock, and from there the San Francisco Giants never looked like losing.
He finished with three RBIs, matching his career high, plus a home run. San Francisco beat the Minnesota Twins 5-2 on Monday to open their final home series of the year.
Two innings decided it. Bo Davidson singled in his big-league debut and promptly stole a base, Brett Harris cleared the bases with a two-run single, and in the second Gilbert did it again for another pair. Four-nothing before Minnesota had figured out where they were.
The fifth brought his third straight hit of the evening. That one left the yard, his 11th of the season.

Tidwell waved for the trainer and walked off
Not everyone had a night like that.
Blade Tidwell was cruising. Three and a third, one run, three hits, four strikeouts, nobody walked. Facing Ryan Jeffers he suddenly stopped, seemed to feel something in his throwing arm, motioned for the trainer and left the mound.
Two batters before that, Brooks Lee had taken his shutout away with his 24th homer of the year.
The bullpen took care of the rest. Tristan Beck, Sam Hentges, Jason Foley and Trent Harris covered the last 17 outs and gave up a single hit and a single run between them. Beck picked up the win off two and two-thirds hitless innings; Harris closed a perfect ninth for his second save.
Zebby Matthews came out after five for Minnesota. Five runs, eight hits, no walks, nine strikeouts, and a record that slides to 9-11.
Two clubs with nothing left to play for
San Francisco are 65-92. Minnesota are 73-84. October stopped being a conversation in either clubhouse weeks ago.
The rookies have not read the memo. Emmanuel Rodriguez jumped on Foley’s first pitch in the eighth and put it in the center-field seats, his second homer in ten career games.
The Giants had just been swept in three by the Dodgers and managed four hits in the process. Ten this time. Minnesota have dropped three of five on a seven-game swing through the West, and there are more of those to come.
