An ankle sprain, then a phone call
Dallas Goedert went off midway through the second quarter on Sunday against Tennessee. A block at the line, a Titans defender diving low, and the knee gave way. Early word is an MCL sprain.
Philadelphia did not hang about. According to several US media reports, the Eagles signed Zach Ertz on Monday and stashed him on the practice squad. The Ringer says he should be moved up to the active roster for Week 3 against the Bears.
Ertz is 35. He had been without a team since the start of the season. His last stop was Washington in 2024 and 2025.

Eleven catches short of the franchise record
The move makes sense beyond the injury crisis. Ertz spent the first eight seasons of his career in Philadelphia, who drafted him in the second round in 2013, 35th overall. He made three Pro Bowls there. And he had seven catches for 67 yards and a touchdown in the Super Bowl LII win over the Patriots.
He has 579 catches in an Eagles shirt. The all-time franchise record belongs to Hall of Famer Harold Carmichael. Ertz is 11 receptions shy of that mark.
Across his career, spanning Philadelphia from 2013 to 2021, Arizona from 2021 to 2023 and Washington, he has 825 receptions, 8,592 yards and 57 touchdowns in 181 games, including 143 starts.
The two men know each other well
Ertz and Goedert shared a locker room from 2018 to 2021, until Ertz was traded to Arizona during the season. Now one has replaced the other.
Goedert, 31, had caught just one pass for 4 yards before leaving the field. His Eagles total stands at 414 catches, 4,757 yards and 37 touchdowns in 110 games.
Philadelphia is coming off a win over Tennessee and hosts Chicago. How long Ertz stays in the job is another question.
