Cameroon vs Comoros: Garoua to get the wheels turning again 
Cameroon kick off their AFCON 2027 campaign on Thursday at 21:00 Paris time. The Indomitable Lions host Comoros at the Stade Roumde Adja in Garoua.
The schedule leaves no room for easing in. Four days after this one, the team head to Brazzaville to face Congo in round two.
David Pagou has named 26 players for this window, and the squad has raised a few eyebrows. Five players are in line for their senior debuts: Lilian Njoh, Bil Nsongo, Harouna Djibirin, Roy Nyengue and Merlin Lakog.
The bold calls do not stop there. Nouhou Tolo and Christian Bassogog, the two standout captains from the last AFCON, have both been left out.
The coach also has to deal with two injury withdrawals. Goalkeeper Devis Epassy and Manchester United midfielder Carlos Baleba will miss out.
Comoros, meanwhile, arrive with a reputation for being stubborn and hard to break down. Their last AFCON backed that up in the clearest possible way.
Garoua has usually treated Cameroon well, and the fans up north have been waiting months for a night like this. This opener has to be a launchpad, not a banana skin.
Cameroon have not played a competitive match since their AFCON quarter-final on January 9. Eight months without one is a long time for a team of this size.
Comoros are likely to stick to the same old formula as at the AFCON: a deep block, little space and low-scoring games. Thursday night does not need much imagination to picture.
Cameroon: a proper level, and a season to digest 
The last AFCON showed this group can live with the big boys. A 1-0 win over Gabon, a 1-1 draw with Ivory Coast, then a 2-1 victory in Mozambique sealed their group stage.
In the last 16, the Lions beat South Africa 2-1 before falling 0-2 to Morocco in the quarter-finals. Knocked out by the eventual finalists, and with no real shame in it.
The real blow of the season came earlier. On 13 November 2025, Cameroon lost 1-0 at home to DR Congo and waved goodbye to the 2026 World Cup.
Since the AFCON, the schedule has been almost empty. Just two friendlies in March: a 1-0 defeat in Australia, then a 2-0 win over China.
That lack of rhythm is the big question on Thursday night. Six months without a competitive game will leave some fingerprints on the timing and the connections.
Still, the base remains solid. Across their five AFCON matches, Cameroon conceded only five goals and never let anyone score more than twice against them.
With five new faces and two senior players left out, Pagou is clearly trying to refresh the group. At home in Garoua, against this sort of opposition, it is the ideal test without too much risk.
The March friendlies showed a Cameroon side still a bit hit and miss. They lost 1-0 in Australia, then backed it up with a tidy 2-0 win over China four days later.
Pagou’s selections have shaken up the pecking order, which can spark either a response or a mess. The first 15 minutes should tell us plenty.

Comoros: strong shape, no punch up front 
Comoros have been the hardest side to shift on the continent over the past year. At the last AFCON, they came away with two 0-0 draws, against Zambia and Mali.
The other side of that coin is ugly. Across those three AFCON games, Comoros did not score once, after shipping two against Morocco in the opener.
Their latest outing was on June 9, and it went well. A 1-0 win in Equatorial Guinea, on a trip that had more traps than comfort.
Spring was less lively: a 0-0 in Namibia at the end of March, then a 1-0 defeat in Kazakhstan three days later. Tight scores again, very few goals again.
In World Cup qualifying in autumn 2025, Comoros beat Central African Republic 2-0 before losing 2-1 to Madagascar and 1-0 in Ghana. Nothing humiliating, never blown away.
The pattern is obvious: this side almost never gets battered, but they almost never score either. In their last six outings, the Comorians have managed just one goal.
To get anything in Garoua, they need to keep it at 0-0 for as long as possible. That is their game, but it is not always enough against a team that reached the last AFCON quarter-finals.
Their last win came on June 9 in Equatorial Guinea, by the odd goal. Before that, you have to go back to November 2025 and a 1-0 win over Namibia.
This is the sort of team that can hang around for a long time and still end up folding. Against Cameroon, with the crowd behind them, they will need to be spot on for 90 minutes.

Comoros have scored just once in their last six games and drew a blank throughout the last AFCON. Cameroon, for their part, never conceded more than two goals in five AFCON matches.
This has all the markings of a tight night, with Cameroon likely to edge it without turning it into a shootout. Their last four games have all been decided by one or two goals at most.
In Garoua, with a far stronger squad and a crowd behind them, the Indomitable Lions should do the business. We are backing a Cameroon win in a low-scoring game.
