Boxing: Isaac Cruz flattens Bravo and calls out Ryan Garcia

A left hook to end the argument

Isaac Cruz shut down a fight that was getting away from everyone. The Mexican blasted Nestor Bravo with a left hook at 1:30 of the sixth round on Saturday night at San Diego’s Pechanga Arena. Bravo sat down hard on the back of his shorts and never got up before referee Thomas Taylor reached ten. Cruz keeps his interim WBC super-lightweight title.

The result was no surprise. Cruz went in a 7-to-1 favorite. The manner of it was far less predictable. For five rounds the bout looked more like a street brawl than a title fight.

Bravo lost two points along the way. One for holding, another for dumping Cruz to the canvas. He was trying to break the rhythm of an opponent who only ever comes forward, even when it costs him to do it.

Eleven years without being stopped, until now

One number tells you what Cruz did here. Bravo had never been stopped as a pro across an 11-year career. He drops to 24-2, with 17 wins inside the distance, and takes his first KO defeat.

Cruz moves to 29-3-2 with 19 stoppages. His reputation was built on this exact grind: take the shots, keep walking, wait for the opening. It arrived in the sixth.

He still leaves with an interim belt. That is the catch. A temporary title only matters if it buys you the next fight that counts.

Ryan Garcia gets the call

Cruz did not wait for the press conference. Mic in hand, he called out Ryan Garcia, the WBC welterweight champion. It is the sort of bout that matters more to broadcasters than to rankings, and it would fill a California arena without much trouble.

The WBC could also push him toward a unification fight at super-lightweight, where that interim belt still needs backing up. Garcia’s camp has said nothing yet.
