An 80 million euro winger who wants a book club
Eighty million euros. That is what Barcelona paid for Anthony Gordon this summer, and the first thing he wanted to talk about with El Pais at the weekend was reading.
“A book club? I’d like one, but I haven’t tried. The lads are too young, they wouldn’t do it. I know a footballer who reads is rare,” the 25-year-old said.
Then he pushed it further. “I feel like I’ve got a much older soul than my age, like I belong to another time. My personality fits the 90s more. Nowadays, everyone’s obsessed with social media, everything’s become material, and romance seems almost non-existent. I’m not like that. I prefer the past.”

Three months that rewrote his career
The move from Newcastle has gone quickly. A solid individual World Cup with England, then a start in Catalonia that has given Barcelona plenty to like. The 3-1 win at Sevilla on Friday night kept that going.
His point about the gap is not just posturing. Barcelona’s dressing room is among the youngest in Europe, full of players who grew up entirely online. Gordon walked in at 25 from the Premier League with a different set of reference points, and he clearly knows it.
The Spanish press keeps receipts
Lines like this age badly. Tell the world you prefer the past and that your team-mates are too young to read, and the first three-game drought will bring it straight back. Expensive signings get no grace period in Spain.
Gordon has chosen his ground anyway. Assists will decide how he is remembered here, not his bookshelf. What the interview does reveal is a player comfortable saying out loud that he does not quite fit the room he has just joined.
