Six wins, then a brick wall

Freiburg had won their first six competitive matches of the season. Six from six. They arrived in Frankfurt with a chance to go top of the Bundesliga on their own.

They leave with a point and one stubborn stat: nine straight meetings without a win against Eintracht.

And it was quite the game. Frankfurt had already scored 26 goals in four matches this season in all competitions. The Eagles struck first in the 10th minute through Younes Ebnoutalib, who marked his Germany call-up with a simple finish from Ritsu Doan’s cutback. Against the run of play, too.

Scherhant everywhere

Derry Scherhant first wasted a chance. Then he went again, set up by Jordy Makengo on the left, and this time he found the far side netting after cutting inside.

Equaliser. Lifespan: two minutes.

Robin Koch nodded a corner across goal to the far post, and Jonathan Burkardt finished from close range. His sixth goal of his career against Freiburg, his best return against any opponent. Frankfurt were lucky to go in ahead. Matthias Ginter had missed the target, while Scherhant saw a free-kick tipped onto the post.

Three minutes after the restart, Yuito Suzuki brought it level again. A thumping volley at the far post from yet another Scherhant cross.

Six home games, six times conceding twice

The ugly stat for the Eagles: six straight home games conceding at least two goals. Entertaining, yes. Cheap, also yes.

The closing stages opened right up. Scherhant, Doan and Can Uzun all came close to a fifth goal. Burkardt had the best chance, picked out by Ansgar Knauff from six yards, but the Freiburg keeper pulled off a brilliant save. Philipp Lienhart then fired over. In the end, both sides settled for the draw.

Freiburg hand top spot back to Bayern Munich. Frankfurt stay mid-table with one win from four league games, scoring for fun and defending like nobody told them the season had started.
