Conner Weigman saw the field close up. Nobody free. So he ran.

There were 49 seconds left in Lubbock, Houston had just cut it to 28-26, and the Cougars needed the two-point try to tie it. The quarterback put his head down and charged. Austin Romaine stopped him. Replay backed it up: the ball was kept out just short of the line.

Texas Tech escaped 28-26. By a matter of inches.

And Houston had already done the hard part on that final drive. They took over at their own 12-yard line with 2 minutes and 46 seconds left, then chewed up 88 yards in 10 plays before the 10-yard touchdown pass to Patrick Overmyer. Almost the perfect finish. Almost.

A game that started the wrong way round

The Cougars had set the tone early. The first 10 points of the night belonged to them. At that stage, nobody was seriously backing an eighth straight loss against the Red Raiders.

Texas Tech hit back, nothing flashy, just steady and in control. Will Hammond finished with 257 passing yards and a touchdown. J’Koby Williams and Cameron Dickey scored on the ground. Backup quarterback Tommy Castellanos added a rushing touchdown. Kenny Johnson caught four passes for 113 yards and a score.

Weigman, for his part, did enough to keep Houston in it. 27 completions from 38 attempts, 282 yards, three touchdowns to Overmyer, Amare Thomas and Koby Young. It still wasn’t enough.

A grip that keeps tightening

The balance between these two programs is no mystery. Texas Tech has now won eight straight in the matchup. Twelve of the last 13, in fact. Houston may be back in the Big 12 with big ideas, but the climb is still steep.

The Red Raiders open conference play at 3-0, while Houston drops to 2-1 and has to sit with a mess of a start, especially with both teams making their first Big 12 appearance of the year.

Two points. One missed two-point try. These are the games that stick around in the head for a long time.
