New York walked into Target Center and beat the best team in the WNBA. 93-81 on Friday night, and the margin does not quite capture how late it was decided.
Breanna Stewart carried it. 24 points, 10 rebounds, 3 steals, in a game that refused to break open for three quarters.

Three quarters of nothing, then the fourth
Minnesota led 20-19 after ten minutes. The Liberty answered in the second by holding the Lynx to 17, which took them into the break at 41-37.
Minnesota clawed back in the third and got it to three, 65-62. Everything pointed to a finish.
Instead New York closed the door: 28-19 in the fourth, Minnesota’s worst offensive stretch of the night. Olivia Miles topped the Lynx with 20 points and 8 boards and it was not close to enough.
A message, ten days out
None of this dents Minnesota’s position. They are 31-10, 20-3 inside the Western Conference, and still the team everyone else has to solve.
New York are 25-16, 12-5 in the East, and they now know the blueprint works on the road. The playoffs open on 27 September.
These two played for the title in 2024. New York took it. Nothing about Friday suggests a rematch is off the table.
