Bayer Leverkusen vs RB Leipzig: four points to six, and six games with more than three goals 
Bayer Leverkusen have picked up four points from their opening three Bundesliga games, with just one win on the board. That leaves Die Werkself seventh in Germany before they welcome a side openly chasing a podium finish.
RB Leipzig have done better over the same spell with six points, but it is the nine goals scored and three conceded that really stand out. That six-goal difference explains their fifth-place spot, just one point off the top four before kick-off.
The game takes place on Sunday 20 September at 15:30 Paris time at the BayArena. Both teams come into it after wildly different European weeks, and that could tell in the second half when legs start to go.
Carles Martinez Novell is still waiting for his first back-to-back wins of the season, which says plenty about Leverkusen’s patchy start. Across the way, Martin Demichelis, who took over in Leipzig this summer, is facing the toughest test of his short reign so far.
Recent meetings lean strongly towards the home side, with Bayer Leverkusen winning five of the last seven against Leipzig. But another stat fits this one even better: every Bundesliga match played by the two clubs this season has produced at least three goals.
Leverkusen create plenty, but they don’t exactly shut the door 
Bayer Leverkusen opened their league campaign with a 3-2 defeat at Elversberg, a newly promoted side few expected to be anywhere near this level. That result put Martinez Novell under immediate pressure in a region where the club is still judged against its 2024 title.
The reply came a week later with a convincing 4-0 win over Union Berlin on 5 September. It is still the only fully polished Bundesliga performance Leverkusen have managed, and they have not backed it up.
The trip to Augsburg was a reminder of how shaky things still are, with Leverkusen needing a 89th-minute Patrik Schick equaliser to scrape a 2-2 draw. Eight scored and five conceded across three rounds sums them up nicely: loads of threat, far too many gaps at the back.
A Europa League outing at least gave the mood a lift, with a 2-0 win over NK Celje on Wednesday and a clean sheet, which has been a rare sight. Still, it comes with the obvious caveat that the Slovenians are a different level entirely from what arrives here on Sunday.
Leverkusen’s injury list is making life much harder for the Catalan coach. Kennet Eichhorn remains in treatment, Nathan Tella is nursing a back problem, and both right-backs Guela Doue and Montrell Culbreath are out. Jarell Quansah is therefore expected to fill in on the right side of a defence likely completed by Edmond Tapsoba, Facundo Medina and Miguel Gutierrez.

Leipzig can be brilliant one week and a mess the next 
Leipzig started their league season with a clean and comfortable 3-0 win over Borussia Monchengladbach. Demichelis sent out a reassuring message on his Bundesliga debut, and the Saxon fans had every right to feel upbeat about the transition.
What followed was much less convincing: a 3-1 defeat at Werder Bremen’s Weserstadion on 5 September, then a 4-1 loss away to Como in the Champions League. Those two results reopened questions about the Argentine coach’s ability to steady the ship away from home.
Last weekend, though, they answered in brutal fashion with a 5-0 thrashing of Hamburg SV at the Red Bull Arena. Nine goals in three Bundesliga games: no other team near the top has matched that kind of attacking output this early in the season.
The midfield is the big problem right now, with Christoph Baumgartner, Assan Ouedraogo and Rocco Reitz all sidelined at the same time. Demichelis is likely to go with Ezechiel Banzuzi, Neil El Aynaoui and Brajan Gruda in a very young, makeshift midfield.
Up front, Marc Guiu’s muscle injury leaves Christopher Nkunku to lead the line, with Tidiam Gomis and Antonio Nusa out wide. That pace on the flanks is exactly the sort of thing Leverkusen have struggled to deal with against Elversberg and Augsburg.

Every Bundesliga game played by Bayer Leverkusen and Leipzig this season has gone to at least three goals, without exception. Combined, those six matches have produced 25 goals, an average of more than four per game.
Leverkusen have already conceded five in three league matches and have kept only one clean sheet this season, against NK Celje in the Europa League. Against a Leipzig attack that can put five past Hamburg in one go, there is no statistical case for backing a tight, low-scoring affair.
