One year out, and the Boks have picked a difficult night in Gosford
18 September 2027. Polytec Stadium, Gosford, on the Central Coast north of Sydney, 6:00pm local. That is where South Africa will play their last match before defending the World Cup.
The opponent is Fiji. Both unions confirmed the fixture on Friday, exactly a year out. Seventeen days after that game, on 3 October, the Boks begin their title defence against Italy in Adelaide.
It will be only the fourth meeting between the countries. The last time South Africa played in Gosford was 2004, against the Pacific Islanders.

Erasmus wanted a fight, not a rehearsal
Fiji sit inside the world top 10 and made the quarter-finals in 2023. Rassie Erasmus did not land on that name by chance.
“Fiji are a quality side who have regularly pushed some of the best nations in the world in recent years, and they showed they can be a real force by reaching the 2023 World Cup quarter-finals,” the South Africa coach said.
He went further: “This will certainly be a serious test for our team before the global showpiece in Australia. They are a physical, gifted side and they will want plenty out of it, just as we will.”
Both squads plan high-performance camps on the Central Coast either side of the Test, partly to use the local facilities and partly to spend time in the community there.
Fiji see a stage, not just a fixture
Koli Sewabu, who heads the Fijian union, was direct about the appeal. “The Springboks have set the standard in world rugby, and our players savour every chance to test themselves against the best.”
Then he broadened it out. “This is about more than a rugby match. It is about inspiring our people, rallying the Fijian community around the world.” The Fijian diaspora in Australia is large, and he expects it to fill the ground.
Underneath the warm words sit two very different ambitions. South Africa are going for a World Cup three-peat no side has managed. Fiji want to prove 2023 was a floor rather than a ceiling.
