Fourteen years, and the helmet goes down in Foxborough
Thirty-two interceptions. That is where Stephon Gilmore’s ledger closes.
The former cornerback was back in Foxborough on Friday to sign a ceremonial contract and retire as a New England Patriot. He had announced he was done back in April, and he had not taken an NFL snap since 2024, so the paperwork was a formality. The gesture was not. New England was where everything clicked for him, and the franchise wanted the goodbye to happen on that field.
Gilmore turns 36 on Saturday. Four of his 13 seasons came in New England. One of them brought a Super Bowl ring, from LIII.

2019: six picks, two touchdowns, one trophy
He led the NFL in interceptions that year with six, two of which he took back to the house. Twenty passes defended, also the league high. Defensive Player of the Year followed.
The groundwork had been laid a season earlier. Two postseason interceptions in the 2018 run helped carry New England to the title, and he made first-team All-Pro in both years.
Career line: 32 interceptions, eight forced fumbles, 617 tackles across 180 games and 173 starts.
Six jerseys for a player who only ever felt like one thing
Buffalo from 2012 to 2016. New England from 2017 to 2020. Then Carolina, Indianapolis, Dallas and Minnesota, in that order. Five Pro Bowls along the way.
He grew up in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and stayed close to home for college, picking off eight passes for the Gamecocks between 2009 and 2011. Buffalo took him 10th overall in 2012. He finished where he was best.
