Golf: Greyserman and Cole share the lead at the Biltmore Championship

Two 64s open the FedEx Cup Fall

Max Greyserman and Eric Cole both signed for 64, seven under, on Thursday at The Cliffs at Walnut Cove. The two Americans share the lead at the Biltmore Championship in Asheville, North Carolina, a brand-new event that doubles as the opening stop of the FedEx Cup Fall.

A shot back sit Chris Kirk, Ben Kohles, Jackson Suber, Canada’s Mackenzie Hughes and Peter Malnati. At 66 are Pierceson Coody, Jacob Bridgeman, Australian Cam Davis and Ireland’s Seamus Power. Harry Higgs, Austin Smotherman and Neal Shipley were still out there at the same number when darkness shut the day down.

The two leaders have something odd in common. Both are inside the world’s top 100. Neither has won on the PGA Tour. Greyserman owns five runner-up finishes. Cole has five podiums. Both have lost in playoffs.

Eight birdies apiece, built two different ways

Greyserman, 31, made eight birdies, four of them back-to-back-to-back-to-back from the 7th through the 10th. He rolled in an 18-footer at the par-3 7th and a 16-footer at the 14th.

Cole, 38, also made eight, and his only bogey came on his last hole, the 9th. The putter carried him: more than 109 feet of putts holed on the day, including a 21-footer for birdie at the 1st.

One of them has far more riding on the weekend

Cole finished inside the top 50 of the FedEx Cup standings this season. His card is locked for next year and every Signature Event is open to him. He can swing freely.

Greyserman started the week 103rd. A win jumps him to 51st. That number carries weight. The top 100 after the FedEx Cup Fall keep their cards, and anyone landing between 51st and 60th picks up invites to the first two Signature Events of 2027. Three rounds still sit between Greyserman and all of that.
