Castres Olympique vs RC Toulon: two one-point defeats, the stat that sums up Toulon’s shaky start 
RC Toulon have lost their first two Top 14 matches by a single point each. 26-27 at Jean-Dauger, then 20-21 at Mayol against Stade Rochelais.
Two losses by a combined two points only earns defensive bonus points in the standings. Toulon sit 12th before heading to Tarn.
Castres have picked up more on paper, but their start has been uneven. They opened with a 29-20 win over Vannes before going down 43-29 at Perpignan.
The match kicks off the third round on Saturday 19 September at 14:30 at Stade Pierre-Fabre. Canal+ Sport will show it.
Ninth against 12th, so no headline act. Still, it matters plenty for the early rhythm of both clubs. Another defeat and Toulon would still be winless after a month of action.
Both sides have posted similar attacking numbers, with Castres on 58 points and Toulon on 46. The real gap is in the win column.
Castres Olympique: points only coming at Stade Pierre-Fabre 
Castres beat Vannes 29-20 in front of their own fans to open up. They were already 17-6 up at the break.
The penalty try awarded in the 31st minute, right after Medrano saw yellow, swung the first half. Goodhue, Durand and then Vanverberghe later added three more tries for the Tarn side.
The trip to Perpignan told a very different story. 24-7 down after half an hour, Castres clawed back to within two points at 31-29 before folding to Peceli Yato’s double.
That fightback says plenty about the Castres group. It also points to a start that has been far too slow, with 43 points conceded the heaviest burden they have carried so far this season.
The Tarn club signed Hamish Watson in July 2026, with the Scottish flanker arriving from Edinburgh on a one-season deal. His breakdown nous goes straight at the issue exposed in Catalonia: being too slow to compete over the ball.
The only league points Castres have earned this season have come at home. Stade Pierre-Fabre is still their main card before they host a side that has not won yet.

RC Toulon: 46 points scored, 48 conceded, zero wins 
Toulon pushed Bayonne all the way on the opening weekend before going down 27-26. Rayan Rebbadj’s double had hauled the Var side back within touching distance late on.
Charles Ollivon went off in the 50th minute with a nose injury in the middle of an already tight contest. Losing your lock at that point did Toulon no favours in the set-piece battle.
The visit from Stade Rochelais was the same story, right down to the scoreline, with Toulon losing 20-21. Missed kicks and handling errors broke up a game they could have turned in the last quarter.
Franck Azema, appointed head coach in summer 2026, has handed the captaincy to Gael Fickou and Englishman Lewis Ludlam. Baptiste Serin and Charles Ollivon are no longer wearing the armband this season.
The RCT have scored 46 points and shipped 48 across those two rounds. The numbers tell the story: they are competing everywhere and finishing nowhere.
A third defeat in Tarn would leave Toulon marooned in the bottom half of the table before the season is even a third of the way through. For a club chasing the play-offs, the margin for error disappears quickly at this rate.
