Aviron Bayonnais have shipped 96 points across two Top 14 matches. No club in the competition comes close to that defensive mess at this stage.
A lot of that damage came from the 70-28 hiding at Le Hameau, on a night when Pau ran in ten tries. Even so, Bayonne sit 11th thanks to that one-point win over Toulon on the opening weekend.
Clermont come in seventh, with a very different look: steady results and a far more reliable attacking output. ASM have scored 61 points and conceded 56 over the same period.
Kick-off is on Saturday 19 September at 16:35, at Stade Jean-Dauger. Canal+ and Canal+ Sport will show the game.
The stakes go beyond the table for the hosts. Another battering after the Pau collapse would leave serious doubts over the backbone of this Basque side.
Clermont, meanwhile, still haven’t won away since the start of the season. A result at Jean-Dauger would push ASM up the standings before the break.
Aviron Bayonnais: one-point win, then 70 points shipped 
Bayonne began the campaign with a 27-26 win over Toulon at Jean-Dauger. Rayan Rebbadj’s brace dragged the visitors back within a point in the closing minutes.
That narrow success at least backed up home advantage. The Basques haven’t lost at home this season, and it’s pretty much the only bright spot in their opening run.
The trip to Le Hameau turned into a shambles from the fourth minute. A yellow card for full-back Yohan Orabe left Bayonne down a man against an already roaring Section Paloise.
Pau were 35-7 up at half-time and finished with a 70-28 win, scoring ten tries to four. Bayonne never got their defensive shape back after that awful start.
Orabe has been handed a three-week ban for his tackle on Attissogbe. He will miss Clermont’s visit, forcing the Basque staff to reshuffle their back line.
The Bayonne paradox is simple enough: 55 points scored in two games, which is hardly poor, and 96 conceded. The attack is doing its job. The defence is not.

ASM Clermont: a defensive bonus at Lyon, then a controlled win at Marcel-Michelin 
Clermont opened with a 40-36 defeat on the road at Lyon. The Auvergnats were 20-0 down after half an hour.
They fought back to four tries apiece with eight minutes left and still walked away with a defensive bonus point. Not many teams claw back from that sort of hole away from home and still take something.
The visit of Stade Francais was more about patience than sparkle. It was only 3-6 at half-time before ASM pulled clear, 25-16.
Bautista Delguy’s try with ten minutes left, born from a loose pass by Paris full-back Leo Barre under pressure, denied Stade Francais a defensive bonus. Small margins, huge value over a season.
Baptiste Jauneau is leading Clermont as captain this year. His mix-up on the try line at Gerland had handed Gabin Lorre the season’s first try, but the scrum-half soon put that behind him.
Clermont have taken points from both outings, including one away from home. That is exactly what their weekend opponents have failed to do.

Bayonne shipped 70 last week and go into this one without Orabe, who is suspended for three weeks. A defence leaking at that rate isn’t building a big winning margin, even at Jean-Dauger.
Clermont won’t lose by more than five points here.
