An early kick-off, and a name on the scoresheet
Yerevan hosted the earliest fixture of the Europa League league phase, and Tobias Guddal used it. The Sparta Praha forward scored the first goal of the 2026/27 competition, then added the second. By the time the rest of Europe kicked off, the opening pages of the season had already been written in Armenia.
Sparta beat Ararat-Armenia 4-1. The Czech side travelled as favourites and played like it, turning the first half into a procession and never letting the hosts back to parity.
Guddal’s double sets the tone for a player the club expects to carry its attack across eight league phase matches. Scoring twice inside the opening fixture of a European campaign removes a lot of early questions.

Ararat-Armenia hold on to one goal
The hosts avoided the blank sheet, but four conceded on matchday one leaves them with an immediate problem. Goal difference separates clubs in a single table of 36, and Ararat-Armenia now carry a deficit of three before their second fixture.
Qualifying for the league phase already counts as the achievement for a club of their size. Converting that into points is the harder part, and the schedule does not soften after Sparta.
Sparta take the early advantage
Three points and a plus-three difference push Sparta straight into the upper half of the table before most of Wednesday’s fixtures finished. The top eight qualify directly for the round of 16, so margins of victory matter from the first night onwards.
Sparta have seven matches left to build on it. They begin with the best possible platform: maximum points, a striker already scoring, and a goal difference working for them rather than against.
