League Cup: Brighton stun Man United after 2-0 collapse

Ten minutes of joy, then the collapse

2-0 after 10 minutes. Old Trafford was in full voice. There were still 80 minutes to go, and Manchester United somehow found a way to throw it all away.

Brighton walked away with the place in the next round. 3-2. In the third round of the League Cup. For a club of United’s size, it is the sort of night you do not want replayed at family gatherings.

The turning point came from a kid. Kostoulas, 19, pulled one back just before half-time. Nothing that looked decisive on paper. But the Red Devils went in with doubts creeping in, and they never really came back out.

Gross and De Cuyper finish the job

Second half. Gross levelled it. De Cuyper tucked away the third. Michael Carrick’s men never looked like they believed they could respond.

There are excuses if you want them. Brighton are a Premier League side in form, and they were above United before kick-off. This was not some cup banana skin against a fourth-tier outfit. But conceding three after going 2-0 up at home is not something you explain away with league position.

Back-to-back defeats, with the derby still in the legs

That is United’s second straight defeat. The last one was the Manchester derby. In other words, it has been a long week at Carrington.

The season is still young. It is already starting to look like trouble.
