Two hundred and fifty-seven yards, four different ways
Tennessee Tech picked a good afternoon to introduce itself to the Southern Conference.
Tre’ Holloway ran, caught and returned his way to 257 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns in a 45-19 win over Samford, the programme’s conference opener as a new SoCon member. Stats Perform named him the FCS National Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday.
The redshirt junior scored on receptions of 48 and 43 yards and added a 4-yard rushing touchdown, then took a punt back 76 yards. That return is the third longest in Tennessee Tech history. Of his 257 yards, 129 came on kickoff and punt returns, which is where the special teams citation was earned.

A freshman doing the same maths
Denver Harper needed six touches. Austin Peay’s redshirt freshman turned them into 196 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns in a 63-7 win over Morehead State, and the United Athletic Conference side came away with the National Freshman award.
Three catches produced 124 yards and scores of 72 and 31 yards. He then returned a punt 67 yards with 14 seconds left before half-time. Across the season his five touchdowns have come from an average of 48.6 yards out, a number that says plenty about how Austin Peay are using him.
Niekamp keeps climbing, SFA keeps winning
Illinois State’s Tye Niekamp collected the defensive award for 11 tackles, two sacks and three tackles for loss in a 28-24 win at FBS opponent Northern Illinois. The two sacks were a career high for a two-time first-team All-American. He is now on 364 career tackles, more than any other active Division I player.
Stephen F. Austin took the team honour. Colby Carthel’s side scored the final 26 points in a 26-7 win at Abilene Christian, the biggest margin in the rivalry since 1981 and the fourth largest across 29 meetings. Gavin Rutherford threw touchdown passes to Bugs Mortimer and Gerald Edimo and ran for a third, while the defending Southland champions sacked ACU three times and held the hosts to 33 net rushing yards.
Stats Perform has been handing out FCS honours long enough for the weekly list to carry weight. Its season-ending awards reach their 40th year this winter.
