Champions League: Munich gets the 2028 final, Camp Nou the 2029

Thirty years between two nights in Barcelona

The last European Cup final at Camp Nou was 1999, Manchester United and Bayern Munich, two goals in stoppage time. The next one arrives in 2029.

UEFA’s executive committee met in Thessaloniki on Tuesday and settled both of the next open dates. Munich takes the 2028 Champions League final. Barcelona gets 2029.

Munich was never in doubt. The Allianz Arena was the only candidate on the table, so the committee had nothing to weigh. The ground opened in 2005 and already hosted the 2024-2025 final.

Wembley loses one it wanted

2029 was the contested vote. Camp Nou went in as favourite but had to get past Wembley to land it. UEFA went Spanish, betting that the renovation will be long finished by then.

For Barcelona the timing is the point. Years of building work, home games played somewhere else, a stadium that slipped off the European map. A final puts it back.

Wembley stays what it has always been, one of the busiest venues on the continent. Losing 2029 changes nothing about that. It does say something about how UEFA likes to move its biggest nights around.

Lyon gets the women’s final, and 59,000 seats with it

The committee also handed the 2028 women’s Champions League final to France, at the Groupama Stadium in Decines. The Lyon ground has staged major European men’s fixtures before.

That is a 59,000-seat arena for a women’s final, well beyond the usual. Lyon remains one of the strongest women’s football cities in Europe, so the fit is obvious. UEFA is pulling the competition up toward the men’s scale one venue at a time.
