Premier League: Leeds tear into Newcastle 4-1 at Elland Road

Leeds had it wrapped up before the break

Two goals in 120 seconds. That was all it took for Elland Road to turn Monday night into a rout.

Ao Tanaka fired in on 32 minutes. The effort took a touch off several Magpies players, including Lewis Miley, and spun into the net. Two minutes later Dominic Calvert-Lewin let fly as well, though the goal went down as a Jayden Bogle own goal.

The former Everton striker got his reward just before the interval, in 45+1. Leeds went into the dressing room three up, and Newcastle had barely laid a glove on them.

Okafor adds another, Newcastle grab a late consolation

The second half did nothing to change the story. Noah Okafor made it four on 59 minutes and Elland Road erupted again.

Newcastle had to wait until the death to reduce the damage. Bazoumana Toure found the net in the 90th minute. A consolation, nothing more.

There is a wrinkle worth noting about matchday four: before this one, no home side had won a league game on the day. Leeds ended that run without breaking stride.

A podium spot for Leeds, a wobble for the Magpies

Leeds United move up to third with eight points, and the start they have made is turning heads across England.

Newcastle drop to 12th. Four goals conceded in just over half a match, two of them inside two minutes. The room for error is already shrinking.
