Four Americans, four wins
Guadalajara got underway under a US flag. On Monday in Mexico, the first four matches of the day all went to American players.
Sloane Stephens kicked things off by beating Carole Monnet 6-4, 7-6 (5). Taylor Townsend followed, coming back from a set down to see off Tatjana Maria 6-7 (0), 6-3, 6-2.

Townsend arrives straight from New York
Townsend’s case is worth a closer look. The American has barely stopped moving: on Friday she won the US Open women’s doubles title with Czech partner Katerina Siniakova. Three days later, she was back on court in Mexico after crossing the continent.
Winning a Grand Slam title on Friday and then turning up for singles on Monday at the other end of the continent is no small feat. She even dropped the opening set in a tiebreak without scoring a point, before taking control.
Kayla Day also came through her test, edging Elvina Kalieva in an all-American battle 7-6 (9), 6-4. She saved 12 of the 14 break points she faced, and fought off two set points in a gruelling opening tiebreak. Caroline Dolehide completed the clean sweep by beating Mexican player Renata Zarazua 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
Sonmez makes short work of it, Sao Paulo left waiting
The day also saw Turkish player Zeynep Sonmez breeze past Belarusian Iryna Shymanovich 6-1, 6-1 in 59 minutes.
Two evening matches were still on the card: Polish seventh seed Magdalena Frech against Japanese player Nao Hibino, and Russian No 8 seed Liudmila Samsonova against Elsa Jacquemot.
In Sao Paulo, though, nothing got played. All matches at the SP Open were pushed back to Tuesday because of the weather.
