Rayo Vallecano have shipped 14 goals in their first five league games. No other side in Spain has a defensive record as ugly at this stage of the season.
Espanyol arrive in Madrid having conceded five in the same number of matches. That near three-to-one split sums up the picture heading into round six.
Kick-off is set for Tuesday 15 September at 19:00, at the Estadio Municipal de Butarque in Leganes. The issues still hanging over Vallecas mean the Madrid club are having to host this one on neutral ground.
In the table, there are four points between the teams: four for Rayo, seven for Espanyol. The Madrid side have one win, one draw and three defeats, while the Catalans have two wins, one draw and two losses.
Beñat San Jose’s side come in off a 4-1 defeat at the Santiago Bernabeu, with a Kylian Mbappe double added to by Jude Bellingham and Alvaro Carreras. Sergio Camello had cut the gap in the 51st minute, but the game was long gone.
Manolo Gonzalez watched his team win 2-0 at Osasuna thanks to an early Roberto Fernandez brace. That result has pushed the Catalans into the top half after five rounds.
The recent head-to-head record leans Barcelona’s way: four wins in the last five meetings. Over 10 games, though, Rayo still have the edge overall, with six wins to four.
The last meeting between the clubs ended by the narrowest of margins, a 1-0 Rayo win, with Camello on target. And Camello is still the big talking point for the Madrid side now.

Fourteen goals against in five matches works out at almost three a game. That puts Rayo bottom of the league in this area.
The discipline has been even worse. Three penalties conceded, more than any other La Liga side this season. The penalty box has become a danger zone for the Madrid club.
The setting does them no favours either. Playing at Butarque rather than Vallecas strips Rayo of the atmosphere that has long been their best home weapon.
The injury list is making life harder for Beñat San Jose too. Augusto Batalla is out with a fracture, Jozhua Vertrouwd and Luiz Felipe are dealing with hamstring problems, while Isi Palazon and Randy Nteka are nursing muscle issues.
Jorge de Frutos is also serving the second game of a two-match ban, after already missing the Bernabeu trip. The lack of attacking options is starting to show out wide.
Their start to the season says plenty: defeat in Seville, a draw against Alaves, a 5-2 hammering at the Camp Nou, then a 3-2 win over Racing Santander before the Bernabeu loss.
That 3-2 victory against the Cantabrian promoted side remains Rayo’s only league win of the campaign. Even that needed five goals in total, which says enough about how fragile they are even on good nights.
Then there’s Sergio Camello. Six league goals, a total that puts him level with Mbappe, Lamine Yamal and Raphinha at the top of the La Liga scoring charts.
He has scored in each of his last four appearances in the Madrid shirt. Behind him, Unai Lopez is doing the creative work with three assists.

Espanyol Barcelona: a defence holding firm and an attack back in gear 
Five goals conceded in five rounds: Espanyol have one of the best defensive records in the division. Manolo Gonzalez has not drifted from his principles after last season ended in pain.
That consistency is paying off. The Catalan block stays compact, tight and hard to break down, and they have allowed very few clean chances so far.
The trip to Pamplona was a showcase. Roberto Fernandez scored twice early, then the side shut the door for a tidy 2-0 win.
Roberto Fernandez and Edu Exposito are the foundation of this team now. One leads the line, the other keeps everything moving from midfield.
Gonzalez still has to deal with several attacking absences. Javi Puado is continuing his recovery after surgery on the ligaments in his right knee, while Kike Garcia is out with hamstring and tendon problems.
Andoni Gorosabel is also a doubt after groin and adductor pain kept him out of group sessions. His place on the right flank is still up in the air.
Their season has had its bumps too, with a 2-1 home loss to Real Madrid and a 2-1 defeat at Real Sociedad. A 1-1 draw with Sevilla then got them back on track.
Still, the last trip to Butarque should make them wary. Across Rayo’s 24 home meetings against the Catalans at this venue, the Madrid side have won nine and Espanyol seven.

Our prediction: both teams to score
Rayo are conceding close to three goals a game this season. A side that just scored twice at Osasuna should find a way through at Butarque.
At the other end, Sergio Camello has scored in his last four outings and shares top spot in the Spanish scoring race. A striker in that sort of form rarely walks away without making an impact.
Espanyol have also conceded in four of their first five league games. Both teams to score is the bet that best matches what these two have been producing over the past month.
The neutral venue also matters. Without the pressure of Vallecas behind them, Rayo lose some of the intensity that usually smothers visiting sides.
