Eighteen cautions, two overtimes, one drought over
Kyle Larson’s last Cup win came on May 11, 2025 at Kansas Speedway. Fifty-one races later, the No. 5 Chevrolet took the checkered flag at World Wide Technology Raceway on Sunday, 0.333 seconds ahead of Hendrick Motorsports teammate Alex Bowman. It is his 33rd career victory and his first at the Madison, Illinois track.
The Enjoy Illinois 300 produced 18 cautions covering 87 laps, a track record and the highest total in any Cup race since the 2022 Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte hit the same number. A scheduled 240-lap event ran to 247 across two overtime attempts. Brake rotors exploded, Chase contenders went to the garage, and the running order reshuffled on every restart.
Larson made the call that settled it. On the final stop at Lap 203 he asked for four tires; Joey Logano’s crew chief Paul Wolfe took right sides only on the No. 22 Ford. When the field went green after a Lap 228 wreck involving Bubba Wallace, Christopher Bell and Tyler Reddick, Larson cleared Logano on the inside and did not lose the lead again. Bowman took second from Logano on a Lap 242 restart and spent the closing laps pushing his teammate clear.

The Chase standings turned over
Larson climbed five positions to second in the Chase, nine points behind top seed Denny Hamlin, who finished ninth after a problem on pit road at Lap 199. Bell, winner at Darlington seven days earlier, came home 19th and slipped to third, 18 points back. Ryan Blaney blew a brake rotor and finished 35th, leaving him 33 points adrift.
Five Chase drivers reached the garage before the race ended: Blaney, Daniel Suarez, Chris Buescher, Chase Elliott and Chase Briscoe. Buescher and Elliott both lost rotors, and Elliott collected Briscoe as his Chevrolet spun. The bottom five seeds now sit more than 100 points out of first with eight races left, a gap that historically does not close.
Behind the win
Logano led a race-high 96 laps from pole and took third, cutting his deficit to Hamlin from 72 points to 51. William Byron recovered from a Lap 141 accident for fourth, Ross Chastain fifth. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. finished 26th in his 500th Cup start.
Larson dedicated the win to Bowman, who lost his dog days earlier and who will stop racing full time in Cup after next season. “Gave me the pushes I needed to get clear,” Larson said. The series moves to Bristol on Saturday night.
