Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur: ten trophies on one side, two league points on the other
Liverpool hold the record for League Cup wins with ten trophies. No other English club comes close.
The Reds host Tottenham at Anfield on Wednesday, September 16, with kick-off at 9:00pm CEST. The third round is played over one leg.
Liverpool last lifted the trophy in 2024. Virgil van Dijk headed the winner in extra time against Chelsea at Wembley.
Tottenham are back at Anfield in this competition for only the second time in three seasons. They were dumped out 4-1 on aggregate in the 2024-25 semi-finals.
The night also throws up a very quick reunion. Andy Robertson left Liverpool in July 2026 and signed for Spurs on a free.
The league picture tells its own story. Tottenham sat 18th in the Premier League with two points after four games.
Liverpool, meanwhile, have steadied themselves in both competitions in early September. First came a league win at Portman Road, then a 2-1 comeback over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.
The fixture comes wrapped in a tight schedule. The Reds hosted Fulham on September 12 and head to Bournemouth on September 20.
The draw for the fourth round also takes place on the same Wednesday, September 16. So both clubs will know very quickly what comes next.
With no second leg, there is no safety net. The loser is out in September.
Liverpool: a side that has learned how to win without Salah
Liverpool picked up their first Premier League win of the season at Portman Road. The breakthrough came after a shaky start.
The Champions League followed the same script a few days later. After Atletico Madrid struck first through Marcos Llorente, the Reds turned it around to win 2-1.
Andoni Iraola pulled it off without Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian missed the game, the first time the club had been without him in this competition since 2014-15.
Just how important he is shows up in the numbers. Salah holds the club records in the Champions League with 83 appearances, 47 goals and 19 assists.
The Basque coach has already shown his side can win without their main attacking threat. That matters even more ahead of a cup tie that will almost certainly bring rotation.
A one-off match at Anfield has usually suited the Reds. Tottenham lost there in their last visit in the competition.
Ten League Cup titles set the standard, and Liverpool are not treating this as a box-ticking exercise.
The win over Atletico Madrid came after they had gone behind. That says plenty about the group’s ability to respond when the pressure is on.
The trip to Bournemouth on September 20 closes out the run. Andoni Iraola will have to juggle cup and league over eight days.
Try it for $0.99.
Tottenham Hotspur: a 75 million pound summer and a league campaign going nowhere
Tottenham have taken two points from their first four Premier League games. That leaves the club in the relegation zone heading into this cup tie.
The contrast with their cup run is stark. Spurs smashed Charlton 5-1 in the second round.
Savio scored and set one up on his debut that night. The winger arrived from Manchester City for 75 million pounds in the 2026 summer window.
Roberto De Zerbi had a very busy summer in the market. But so far, all that spending has delivered nothing in the league.
The injury list only makes things worse in London. Mykhail Mudryk picked up an ankle injury after 16 minutes in Premier League action and will miss at least eight weeks.
Andy Robertson, for his part, returns to a ground he knows inside out. The Scot left Liverpool in July 2026 after several seasons as the first choice on the left side.
Everton came to town on September 12, four days before this tie. That turnaround will weigh heavily on De Zerbi’s selection calls.
The 5-1 win over Charlton remains Tottenham’s best performance of the season. It is the one game where they actually found some breathing room.
Savio already looks central to De Zerbi’s attack. His debut goal and assist go some way to justifying the fee.

Football prediction Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur
Our prediction: Liverpool win
Liverpool have won their last two games, at Portman Road in the league and against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League. They came from behind in the latter.
Tottenham have taken only two points from four Premier League matches and arrive at Anfield without Mudryk for at least eight weeks. They were also knocked out 4-1 on aggregate in 2024-25.
Ten League Cup titles and a one-off tie at home make the balance of power pretty clear. We are backing Liverpool to win at Anfield.
Liverpool are at home in a stadium where Tottenham did not win on their last cup visit. That home edge matters even more in a one-leg tie.
in your pocket.

First, a word on our free tips
- What we publish on mathodds is analysis, nothing more. We share an opinion, a read of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport is what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a goal from nowhere… and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks obvious, it never really is. And yes, that means you can lose. In fact, you will at some point.
- The best approach is to stay sensible. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Do not touch money you need to live on. And above all: do not chase losses, it rarely ends well.
- A bet should stay a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts to take up too much space in your life, if it irritates you or puts you under pressure, take a break. And if needed, speak to a specialist organisation. That is what they are there for.
- In the end, responsibility is yours. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, even with the best analysis in the world.
- Important reminder: betting is illegal for minors and must comply with the law in your country. Gambling can spiral fast (money loss, family tension, addiction). Need Help? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. In the UK? Visit https://www.gambleaware.org/https://www.gambleaware.org/.
No commitment from us
Our tips are not a contract. They carry no legal force. In plain English: you cannot use them to claim anything if a bet loses.
Information changes
A tip is always based on what we know when it is written. But in the meantime, a team sheet changes (like Liverpool’s, for example), a player gets injured, the weather turns… and the analysis can quickly go out of date. We cannot be held responsible for that.
Your role
Before betting, make sure wagers are legal where you are. If they are not, that is your responsibility, not ours.
Responsible gambling first
We cannot say this enough: bet in moderation. If you are struggling to keep control, do not wait to get help. We cannot be responsible for compulsive or excessive use of the information published on the site.
Legal age
mathodds content is for adults only. By using this site, you confirm that you are old enough under the law to bet.
