Fulham have taken just one point from their first four Premier League matches. They were bottom of the table before the trip to Anfield on 12 September, where they came away with a 0-0 draw.
That meagre return gives this cup tie instant value. Progress would stop the slide before the next league game even comes around.
The second round had already sent a clear message. AFC Wimbledon were brushed aside 3-0 at Craven Cottage, with no real debate about the result.
The London Stadium is a different test altogether. The Cottagers face a side on a roll, not an opponent from the lower leagues.
The division gap favours Fulham on paper. Their start to life in the Premier League makes that look a lot less convincing.
The schedule also works against the visitors. Fulham were coming off a trip to Liverpool just three days before this cup tie.
Squad management will be key for the west London club. Go too heavy on the changes against a confident West Ham side and elimination starts to look very possible.

West Ham are on three wins in a row in the Championship and showed at Southampton that they can score even with a heavily rotated side. Fulham, with just one point from four Premier League games, have no real reason to sit back here.
A one-match format usually pushes both teams to chase the goal rather than protect a lead. We like over 2.5 goals at the London Stadium.
