Atletico Madrid and Osasuna sit on exactly the same points total in the table: seven. That is where the similarity ends, with the Colchoneros having played one fewer match than the Navarre side.

This fixture lands in a three-match week, with La Liga packing in a full midweek slate before the international break. Both sides arrive with bodies already feeling the strain.
The imbalance shows up most clearly at the back. Atletico have shipped six goals in four matches, Osasuna eight in five: neither side has found any real defensive rhythm since the restart.
Those 14 goals conceded between them tell you all you need to know about where their back lines are right now. Both clubs built recent seasons on far sturdier foundations.
For Atletico, the start has been mixed. A 2-2 draw with Villarreal followed by a 3-0 thumping at San Mames against Athletic Bilbao has raised fresh doubts over the unit’s resilience.
Osasuna have had a similar wobble in early September, losing 5-2 at Mendizorroza to a Deportivo Alaves side that gave them no breathing room. Five goals shipped in one night for a team usually hard to push around is a warning sign.

The table has Atletico ninth and Osasuna 12th, separated only by goal difference. After a month of the season, both are stuck in mid-table traffic.
This is the kind of match that can kick-start either campaign. The winner will pull straight back within touching distance of the European places, just three points away.

Seven goals scored in four La Liga games, six conceded: Atletico’s balance stands at plus one. For a club long built on defensive stinginess, that looks odd.
The 2-2 draw at home to Villarreal in week two set the tone. The Colchoneros could not close out a game against a side that had still not won at that point.
The 5 September trip to San Mames confirmed the frailty. Beaten 3-0 by Athletic Bilbao, Atletico conceded twice in two minutes straight after the break, in the 46th and 48th minutes, then a third in the 90th.
That kind of collapse says plenty about how they handle pressure. They never got back control after the early blow, and that is the biggest concern heading into Wednesday.
The numbers are still respectable: two wins, one draw, one defeat from four outings. The problem is consistency, not attacking quality.
The schedule brings a third match in eight days, after the trip to San Sebastian the previous Sunday. Freshness will be a real factor at kick-off.
At home, Atletico return to an environment that has often suited them, on a pitch where they tend to manage the tempo better. That is where they are most likely to dictate terms.
The key issue is whether the back line can avoid giving away cheap ball in its own half. Osasuna live for those moments and do not need many chances to score.

Osasuna: Budimir carries the attack, and not much else is getting by 
Osasuna have scored five goals in five La Liga matches and conceded eight. That is the lowest attacking return of any side on seven points or more.
Two wins, one draw and two defeats make up their start. Their output has been patchy, with tight, scrappy games followed by much more open nights.
The trip to Vitoria on 6 September remains the costly one. Beaten 5-2 by Alaves, the Navarre side watched Lucas Boye hit a hat-trick and conceded five in a single match.
Even in that mess, Ante Budimir still managed a brace, including a penalty in the 64th minute. The Croatian striker remains their main threat and the focal point of everything they do.
That dependence is both strength and weakness. When Budimir is shut down, Osasuna offer very little and the other attacking options struggle to make an impact.
Their own schedule is packed too, with a trip to Barcelona to face Espanyol four days before this Madrid visit. They are also operating on a tight turnaround.
Osasuna’s style is built on aggression, duels and set pieces. Against an Atletico defence that has shown cracks in transition, that can still create problems.
The key period is the first 30 minutes. If the Navarre side can get through that spell without conceding, their plan becomes far easier to trust.
