Seven losses, zero wins
Gabriel Hughes takes the mound in Detroit on Sunday carrying a stat line that tells its own brutal story. No wins, seven losses, a 5.81 ERA. The Colorado Rockies right-hander is running out of rookie season with nothing at all in the win column.
His last start said something else entirely. At Yankee Stadium on Tuesday, Hughes gave up two runs, only one earned, over five innings. No walks. Six strikeouts. Colorado lost 5-3 anyway, which is roughly the shape of his whole 2026.
Aaron Judge was back in the New York lineup that night. Hughes struck him out twice, the first time in the opening inning. “Gabe was excellent. He attacked the zone,” said manager Warren Schaeffer, who singled out the curveball and the slider. Hughes had already limited Baltimore to a run over 4 2/3 innings in his first September start. August went badly: a 10.03 ERA across five outings, no win there either.

Jobe is rebuilding an arm, not a season
Jackson Jobe (1-2, 4.45) goes for Detroit, his seventh start since last year’s Tommy John surgery. The 24-year-old struck out seven against Cleveland in his most recent outing, a season high over five innings. The Guardians won it 3-2 in 10.
Jobe knows exactly where the problem sits. He does not get ahead in counts. “I’m one of the worst pitchers in the league at getting ahead,” he said after needing 93 pitches to get through that start. He has seen the Rockies once, last season, when they hung six runs on him in 3 2/3 innings.
Detroit smells a sweep
The Tigers (69-79) want all three. They erased a three-run deficit in the eighth on Saturday and turned it into an 11-7 win. Hao-Yu Lee started the rally with a double and closed it with a two-run triple. Hunter Goodman had put Colorado ahead earlier with a three-run homer.
The Rockies (55-93) have lost six in a row. Hughes has never pitched against Detroit. Fewer than 15 games remain on Colorado’s schedule.
