A 49-year-old record goes down
Seattle blew past the Athletics 19-1 in West Sacramento on Tuesday night. Eighteen runs. No team in the franchise has won by that margin since it was founded in 1977.
The Mariners piled up 23 hits, their best total of the season, along with the 19 runs. Eight batters scored at least once.
Cole Young homered and drove in five runs. Randy Arozarena also went deep and added four RBIs.

Woo keeps Oakland in check
Bryan Woo went six innings, allowing one unearned run and three hits, while striking out five and walking two. He is now 12-9 on the season.
The right-hander has a 9-1 record in 12 career starts against the Athletics. Nobody seems to suit him better.
Behind him, the offense kept pouring it on. Michael Arroyo launched his first major league home run and drove in three. Dominic Canzone and J.P. Crawford also went yard. Weston Wilson tied a career high with five hits. Young, Arroyo, Josh Naylor and Julio Rodriguez each added three hits.
Oakland’s run comes to a stop
The A’s had lost twice in their previous nine games. This one came at the worst possible time.
Shea Langeliers had been activated just before first pitch after a knee issue. The All-Star catcher went 1-for-3 and drove in Oakland’s only run.
Gage Jump paid the price. The starter was tagged for five runs on five hits in just two innings and falls to 6-11. The rest of the bullpen spent the night picking up the pieces.
For Seattle, the regular season is now a sprint. The Mariners had slipped in the American League Wild Card race in early September, not least after a rough stretch against these same Athletics. A win like this only counts once in the standings. Run differential could still be the tie-breaker if teams finish level.
