34-6 at half, and the revenge was already complete
Twelve months ago Old Dominion walked into Blacksburg and beat Virginia Tech 45-26. Hokies fans watched it happen from their own seats.
Saturday they got it back. 44-21, and it was decided by the interval.
Virginia Tech scored the first 17 points and led 34-6 at the break. They are 2-0 for the first time since 2021. James Franklin, hired onto that sideline over the summer, has yet to lose a game there.

327 yards through the air, eight catches to one tight end
Ethan Grunkemeyer went 31-for-42 for 327 yards and accounted for three touchdowns, finishing one himself from a yard out in the fourth.
Luke Reynolds took the other two. The tight end pulled in eight balls for 108 yards, and his scores from 10 and 16 yards in the second quarter ended any argument about where this was heading.
John Love hit three field goals, the first on the opening possession. Marcellous Hawkins Jr. ran in from 20 for the first touchdown. Tyson Flowers picked up a loose ball and went 14 yards with it for the second, with 2:29 left in the opening quarter. Nathanial Eichner replied with a 34-yard field goal four seconds later. Nobody noticed.
Four fumbles, seven sacks, one man doing everything
Old Dominion put the ball on the ground four times. Mylachi Williams knocked two of those loose by himself. Virginia Tech’s front reached the quarterback seven times.
Quinn Henicle was the entire Monarchs offense. He threw for 187 yards, ran for 83, and outrushed every player on the field. Both Old Dominion touchdowns went through him: a 7-yard fourth-down throw to Leon Haughton Jr. with 1:14 left in the third, then a 76-yard run with 7:49 on the clock, the longest play anyone produced all afternoon.
Old Dominion are 1-1.
