Two turnovers, two possessions, one game decided
Missouri beat Kansas 38-21 in Lawrence on Friday night and the whole thing turned inside two possessions in the third quarter.
Level at 14-14, Robert Woodyard Jr. forced a fumble from Kansas quarterback Isaiah Marshall and recovered it himself. Austin Simmons drove the Tigers 34 yards and found Donovan Olugbode from eight yards out for the lead. On the first play of the next Kansas series, Woodyard intercepted Marshall at the Jayhawks’ 40 and returned it to the 12. Two plays later Xai’Shaun Edwards ran it in for 28-14.
Kansas trimmed the gap back to a touchdown. Missouri scored the final 10 points and never let them closer.

Simmons backs up his debut
Simmons went 19 of 29 for 292 yards and three touchdowns, a second strong outing since he transferred from Ole Miss. Olugbode caught six passes for 121 yards, Cayden Lee six for 120, and Brent Norfleet took the third touchdown pass. Jamal Roberts carried 28 times for 125 yards.
Roberts got nothing for most of the first half. His first 14 carries produced almost no yardage and one fumble, forced by Leroy Harris III. Then he broke a 64-yard draw to tie the game at 7-7, cutting left inside the Kansas 10 while apparently tracking his pursuer on the video board above the end zone.
A rivalry restarted, and still one-sided
Kansas had opened the scoring through special teams. Harris blocked Blake Craig’s 27-yard field-goal attempt, Austin Alexander scooped up the loose ball and ran 88 yards the other way. On that play referee Jason Autrey pulled up with a hamstring problem trying to keep pace. Umpire Ron Turner, previously a referee in the SWAC, ran the rest of the game.
Marshall finished 13 of 30 for 168 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions, and added 23 yards on 20 carries. Dylan Edwards led the Jayhawks on the ground with 39 yards from six attempts.
The Border War dates back to 1891 and went dormant when Missouri joined the SEC in 2012. The teams have met only twice since, once in each of the past two seasons, and Kansas have lost both. Missouri now have five straight wins in the series. The Tigers move to 2-0, the Jayhawks fall to 1-1.
