Southampton vs Bristol City: the Championship’s sharpest attack meets its best traveller 
Fourteen goals in six games: Southampton have the most dangerous attack in the Championship and are somehow only 13th. The reason is simple enough — four points were stripped off them before the season even kicked off.
The Saints started the campaign on minus four after being punished for a spying system involving other clubs, an issue that was already brought to light last season. That same case cost them a place in the play-off final against Hull City.
Without that deduction, Tonda Eckert’s side would be sitting second right now. Seven points on the board, but the football says something very different from the table.
Bristol City arrive in a very different mood, but with plenty of bite of their own. The Robins are on a three-game winning streak and sit seventh with 10 points from five league matches.
Michael Skubala takes his men to the south coast for a third straight away trip. Their previous two journeys, to Preston and Burnley, both ended in wins.
The game takes place on Saturday 12 September at 16:00 at St Mary’s Stadium. Play-off places are already in both teams’ sights.
Both sides come in with plenty of attacking confidence. Southampton have scored 14 in six, Bristol City nine in five: nobody here looks interested in shutting up shop.
The real difference is consistency. Southampton have picked up at least a point in five straight league games, Bristol City in four.

Southampton: firepower blazing despite the punishment 
Southampton began with a 2-1 defeat at Watford, then simply stopped losing. Three wins and two draws later, the Saints are unbeaten in five league matches.
Their attacking return is the best in the division, with 14 goals in six games. No other Championship side has reached that total.
Two results sum up the threat. A 5-1 hammering of a decent Millwall side, then a 3-1 win on Tuesday night that ended Swansea City’s unbeaten run.
Cyle Larin has been the main beneficiary. The Canadian has scored five times in six outings and shares top spot in the scoring charts with Will Lankshear, now at Middlesbrough.
Eckert is not expected to tinker much with the team that beat the Welsh side. No player came out of that match carrying an injury.
The only absentee remains Caspar Jander, who has been out since pre-season with a muscle problem. The German is expected back in the squad soon.
At the back, though, there is still room for improvement. Southampton have conceded seven goals in six games and have let one in every league outing so far.
That imbalance tells you exactly what this side is about. Southampton score plenty, concede regularly, and keep producing open games week after week.

Bristol City: three wins in a row and the best away record 
The Robins did not exactly fly out of the blocks. They went out of the League Cup at home to Walsall, then lost 0-2 to Millwall on opening day in the league.
Since then, Bristol City have not looked back. A 2-2 draw at Birmingham started a run that has now stretched to four unbeaten in the league.
The three wins that followed have had the stamp of a side that knows how to scrap. A 2-1 over Portsmouth, a 3-1 win at Preston North End, then a 2-1 smash-and-grab at Turf Moor.
That last one deserves a second look. Burnley led through Aaron Ramsey just after half-time, but the Robins levelled in the 82nd minute before Yu Hirakawa struck in the 91st.
Hirakawa, who came off the bench at Turf Moor, could be handed a start here. The Japanese winger was part of the Hull City squad that went up last season via the play-off final.
If last week’s scorer does start, Jed Wallace looks the most likely man to make way. The former West Bromwich Albion winger would drop out on the flank.
Physically, this season has been far kinder than the last. Only Luke McNally remains out, still sidelined by the ACL injury that has kept him away since February 2025.
The final angle is historical, and it favours the visitors. Bristol City are unbeaten in their last three meetings with Southampton, who have not won this fixture since November 2023.

A striker with five goals in six games on one side, a team that scores late and often on the other: a goalless draw or a one-sided scoreline doesn’t make much sense here. Both teams to score is the call.
