Getafe vs Deportivo La Corogne: the Galician promoted side arrive in a strong position 
Eight points from four matches and a fifth-place spot in the table: that is what Deportivo La Corogne bring to the Coliseum Alfonso Perez on Sunday at 18:30. The promoted side sit four points clear of their hosts.
The two clubs have not met since February 2018. Getafe won that one 3-0, back when the Galicians were still in the top flight.
The head-to-head record is still tight overall. Just 22 meetings, with Getafe edging it by the slimmest of margins, eight wins to seven.
Deportivo have come a long way. They finished second in Segunda Division last season, having spent time in the third tier between their 2018 relegation and this return.
Getafe, meanwhile, are paying the price for a packed schedule. Their qualification for the Conference League group stage, sealed 4-3 on aggregate against Partizan, has taken a toll on their early-season rhythm.
The Madrid suburbs club’s league record reads one win, one draw and two defeats. Fifteenth with four points, Jose Bordalas’s side have yet to hit top gear.
The fixtures do not get any kinder: after Deportivo come Real Betis, Malaga and then Barcelona before European action begins in October. Getafe have every reason, on the numbers at least, to get something out of this now.
This is a meeting of two teams moving in opposite directions to the pre-season script. That is exactly what makes it so easy to read.
The Coliseum Alfonso Perez is never an easy place for a visitor. Getafe’s only win of the season came there too, a 1-0 against Racing Santander.
Deportivo will have to handle a home side already treating the fifth matchday like a credibility check. This looks set to be tighter than the promoted side’s eight points might suggest.
Getafe: an attack that is not firing 
Getafe have averaged one goal a game in La Liga since the season began. That alone explains the four points from four matches.
Their start tells the story: a 3-0 defeat at Alaves, a 1-0 win over Racing Santander, a 1-0 loss at Osasuna and then a 1-1 draw with Celta Vigo. None of those games saw them score more than once.
The European run has cost them freshness. A 3-1 home win over Partizan, followed by a 2-1 defeat away, was enough to get them through, but only just.
Bordalas’s squad is short-handed. Zaid Romero is suspended after his red card against Celta, while Juanmi, Abdel Abqar, Francho and Christantus Uche are in the treatment room.
Martin Satriano remains a doubt after picking up a knock last time out, though the staff hope to have him available from the start. His link-up with Enes Unal is the only real attacking threat in the Madrid line-up.
Unal remains the hosts’ best weapon with three goals in six appearances this season. The 29-year-old Turk will lead the line again.
Five out and one suspended in a squad already light on firepower leaves Bordalas with very little room to manoeuvre. Expect caution, not adventure.
The European schedule has robbed the group of proper training time since the restart. Bordalas has not been able to drill his usual defensive patterns, and it shows in the three goals conceded at Alaves.

Deportivo: the strongest return to Spain’s top flight 
Deportivo have not lost in La Liga this season. Two wins and two draws, eight points, fifth place.
Their last outing made a statement. The Galicians went to Villarreal, a Champions League side this season, and won 3-2.
Before that, the promoted team beat Valencia 3-1 at Riazor, after back-to-back 1-1 draws with Elche and at Malaga. They are improving by the week.
Their attacking numbers are well ahead of Sunday’s opponents, with 1.67 goals per game compared with Getafe’s single strike. Deportivo have also scored first in each of their last three matches.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, signed in the summer 2026 window, has almost single-handedly driven this attack. Four goals and two assists in four league matches is instant impact.
Bil Nsongo should join him in the final third under Antonio Hidalgo. Adri Altimira returns to the squad after suspension, while Noe Carrillo remains out with a muscle injury.
The club are back in the top flight for the first time since 2017-18 and have a more reliable defensive record than Getafe. That mix, a lively attack and a solid back line, explains their place in the table.
The 3-2 win at Villarreal shows they can handle pressure and still get the job done against better-equipped sides. No defeat since their return to the top tier says plenty.

Deportivo are unbeaten after four rounds and come in off a statement win at Villarreal. A team that has scored first in each of its last three games tends to set the tone.
At the other end, Getafe are scoring one goal per match and will be without suspended Zaid Romero, plus four injured players. Satriano is not even certain to make the XI.
The February 2018 meeting tells us very little now, with both squads completely rebuilt since then. Current form is the only thing that matters here.
So the play is draw or Galician victory. Aubameyang with four goals in four matches against a reshuffled Madrid defence? The numbers lean clearly toward the promoted side.
