Three snaps, then a hospital visit
Sam Darnold lasted one series. He was in a hospital by the end of the night. Thursday morning’s MRI came back without a hip fracture, which several American outlets reported through the day, though Seattle has still put nothing in writing.
John Schneider went on The Pat McAfee Show and offered no diagnosis worth the name. “Sam’s tough, but as for the timeline, we don’t know yet,” the general manager said. “We haven’t even seen him this morning. He came out of the hospital two hours ago. But that’s obviously a lot better than what we feared at the start of the game.”
A GM who has not laid eyes on his starting quarterback yet is not a GM ready to name a return date.

Drew Lock threw more passes in one night than he did all last year
Third down, Darnold looking to escape the pocket, Dre’Mont Jones getting there on a coverage sack. The 29-year-old walked off under his own power with a visible limp, went to the locker room for checks, and was ruled out before halftime.
Then came the part nobody in Seattle saw coming. Lock threw three passes as the backup last season. Three, all year, two of them completed for 15 yards. On Wednesday he went 16 of 22 for 187 yards and a touchdown, hauling the Seahawks out of a 10-0 hole early in the third. Josh Jobe picked off a pass in the end zone with 21 seconds left and Seattle had a 13-10 win.
The opponent made it stranger still. New England, the same team Darnold beat in Super Bowl LX back in February.
Seventeen days, if the staff wants them
Here is where the calendar does Seattle a favor. Next game is September 20 at Arizona, then Washington on September 27. Sit Darnold for the Cardinals and bring him back against the Commanders, and he gets 17 days between snaps without missing more than one start.
Not many quarterback injuries fall that neatly. Whether the staff actually uses the window is another matter, because trotting a man out in Arizona days after he left a hospital is a decision somebody has to sign off on.
