NFL football on the field, illustrating Sam Darnold's hip injury at the Seahawks

NFL: Darnold avoided a fracture, Seahawks await a timeline

The MRI came back better than Seattle feared

Sam Darnold got out of hospital a couple of hours before his general manager went on the radio to talk about him. That detail tells you how fast this one moved.

An MRI taken early Thursday showed no significant damage to Darnold’s right hip, according to multiple reports, and the quarterback may now miss as little as one game. Seattle has not confirmed the finding. John Schneider, speaking on “The Pat McAfee Show”, would not put a number on the absence and would not name a diagnosis.

“Sam’s tough as heck, but timeline we just don’t know yet,” the general manager said. “We haven’t even seen him yet this morning. He just got out of the hospital a couple hours ago. But obviously much better news than we had anticipated early in the game.”

One sack, one drive, and the title defense on hold

The injury arrived on Seattle’s opening possession of Wednesday’s rematch with New England. Dre’Mont Jones caught Darnold trying to escape the pocket and pulled him down on a coverage sack on third down. Darnold reached the sideline unaided, hobbled toward the bench, and was ruled out before halftime after an examination in the locker room.

For the reigning champions, losing the quarterback who delivered Super Bowl LX in February on the very first series of the defense is close to the worst opening sequence available. What happened next complicates the reading.

Drew Lock’s numbers do the talking

Drew Lock threw three passes in the whole of last season. He completed two of them, for fifteen yards. On Wednesday he threw twenty-two, completed sixteen for 187 yards and a touchdown, and brought Seattle back from 10-0 down in the third quarter to win 13-10.

That is the context Schneider is working in, and the schedule adds to it. Seattle does not play again until Sept. 20 at Arizona, then travels to Washington on Sept. 27. Should Darnold sit out the Cardinals game and return against the Commanders, he will have gone seventeen days between appearances, which looks a lot like a bye week wearing an injury label.

Seattle can afford patience it would not normally have at 1-0. Whether it takes that patience is Schneider’s call, and he was not making it on Thursday.
