Ligue 2: Nantes re-sign Carlgren three months after letting him leave

A meniscus, and suddenly nobody has time

Alexis Mirbach tore a meniscus. That is all it took. FC Nantes’ second-choice keeper is out, the goalkeeping pecking order has a hole in it, and the Canaries had roughly 48 hours to fill it.

They did not look far. Patrik Carlgren signed on Thursday night, back at a club he walked away from as a free agent in the summer. Two seasons on the banks of the Erdre, three months gone, and the 34-year-old Swede is in the building again.

One year, with a second in the drawer

The contract runs a season, with an option for another. Nobody is pretending this is a statement signing. It is what an emergency looks like when you write it down.

Nantes’ own statement barely tries to dress it up: “A trusted man, a competitor and someone who knows the place.” Translation, the club knew exactly what it was buying, and Carlgren already knows Grégory Poirier’s dressing room.

There is no bedding-in period to sit through. When the window is that tight, familiarity is the whole point.

What Nantes actually gain

A reliable body behind the No 1, nothing more. But Ligue 2 does not hand out breathers, and an empty goalkeeping bench in September is the kind of risk that costs points in November.

Nantes opened their season last week against Nancy. Another problem in goal was not on the list.
