A meeting is coming, and soon
Real Madrid want their goalkeeper locked down. Spanish radio station COPE reports that the Madrid hierarchy will sit down with Thibaut Courtois’s representatives within days to talk about a one-year extension.
The Belgian’s current deal runs to 30 June 2027. A new one would take him to 2028, at which point he would be 36. Nothing is signed. The Madrid press is careful to say this is still the discussion stage.

Ninth season, still nobody’s second choice
Courtois is 34 and has just begun his ninth campaign at the Bernabeu. Goalkeepers do not usually last that long at a club where the position gets picked apart every few months. He came from Chelsea in 2018 for roughly 35 million euros, grew into one of the dressing room’s senior voices, and has never been meaningfully displaced.
The timing of the talks is not random. They land right after his night against Inter Milan, where his saves were the reason Madrid took a 2-1 win rather than a draw or worse. A 34-year-old still stealing three points on his own is a strong argument in any negotiation.
The succession nobody at Madrid has planned
A one-year extension pushes a problem down the road rather than solving it. Real have never lined up a proper heir to the shirt since Courtois walked in, and letting the contract expire would send the board shopping for a goalkeeper of that calibre on an open market that rarely offers one.
Talks are expected to move quickly. Length is the sticking point. Even a single extra year would say something about how Madrid see the last chapter of their No 1’s career.
