NCAA: Deion Sanders wants a lot more from his offense

A win nobody was happy with

Colorado beat Georgia Tech 14-13 last Thursday on a Julian Lewis touchdown pass to Charlie Williams with 37 seconds left. Even so, Deion Sanders could take very little from it on the offensive side.

The number that has him grinding his teeth is a simple one. The Buffaloes rolled up 307 yards on 76 plays, which works out at 4.0 yards per play. Last season, when they finished 3-9, they were averaging 5.0. In other words, the offense has gone backwards from a year that already went nowhere.

Lewis finished 14 of 27 for 124 yards and a touchdown. Most of the damage came in the fourth quarter.

“We have to be so much better on offense,” Sanders said. “The receivers and the quarterback. Read it better. Make the plays we have to make.”

The defense, meanwhile, collected the praise

While the offense was busy searching for answers, the other units got the plaudits. Lamont Lester Jr. was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week after piling up three sacks and 3.5 tackles for loss against the Yellow Jackets.

Colorado’s defensive line won line of the week honors. Boo Carter was picked as special teams player of the week after blocking Georgia Tech’s 45-yard field goal attempt as the clock ran out. In other words, the Buffaloes won without their offense and thanks to a last-second deflection.

Sanders sees it as a sign of the mood inside the building. “Everyone is fighting for their spots and their reps,” he said. “That’s what we like. It feeds the competition as much as the results.”

Weber State is not arriving to make up the numbers

Saturday’s opponent in Boulder is from the FCS, one level down. Even so, Weber State (1-1) comes in off a 42-point shootout, losing 47-42 at Southern Utah. Nate Dale threw for 282 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Noah Kjar caught nine passes for 150 yards and two scores.

Lester is not expecting a stroll in the park. “Their two tackles are solid,” he warned. “They’ve got a good receiver and a good running back. We should have a real test this week.”

Eric Kjar, the Wildcats’ coach, is approaching the trip in a different way. “The challenge and the opportunity are fantastic,” he said. “It’s a bit unusual for an FCS school, but we’re excited.”
