MLB: Chourio’s four-hit night drags the Brewers past the Cubs

Four hits, and one of them changed everything

Jackson Chourio came to the plate in the ninth with two outs and Milwaukee down 3-2. He was already 3-for-4 on the night. Then he turned on a Jacob Webb pitch and put two runs on the board, and a game the Brewers looked ready to hand over was suddenly level at 3-3.

That swing bought them extra innings. It took one more to finish the job.

The 10th did it. Bases loaded, rookie Luis Lara up against Caleb Thielbar, and a base hit that ended the night 4-3. Thielbar wears the loss and falls to 3-3.

Suzuki ran into the one out Chicago could not afford

The Cubs had first crack at the extra frame. Seiya Suzuki tagged from second on a ball Garrett Mitchell hauled in, tried for third, and was cut down. Chicago’s best look at the go-ahead run died right there on the bag.

Jacob Misiorowski had given Milwaukee everything it needed before any of that: six and a third innings, four hits, a single run. DL Hall handled the rest with one and two-thirds of scoreless relief and moved to 3-0.

Nine games, and 20-odd left to play

The Brewers now sit nine games clear of the Cubs in the National League Central. Chicago holds second. With under a month of regular season on the calendar, a nine-game hole is the kind of arithmetic that stops being a race.

Milwaukee has been chipping away at this margin all summer. One swing from a 22-year-old just made it that much harder to argue with.
