Two years left, no offer on the table
Alexis Mac Allister spoke to reporters on Tuesday and confirmed what Liverpool had not said publicly. The club will not be offering him a new contract.
“There was a chance, as I think everyone knows,” the midfielder said when asked whether he could have left in the summer. “I received the news that the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract, which makes me very, very sad.”
He has two years left on the deal that followed his arrival from Brighton for around £35m. At 27, that timeline puts him in an awkward bracket: valuable enough to keep, close enough to the final year that Liverpool lose leverage on any fee with every passing window.

The season that changed the calculation
That £35m fee looks modest set against what Liverpool have spent since, and for two seasons it ranked among the better pieces of business the club had done. Mac Allister was a regular in the side that won the Premier League in 2024/25.
Last season the level dropped sharply and the criticism that followed was hard to argue with. Manchester City were among the clubs linked with him across the summer. He stayed, though Liverpool have since been credited with interest in AS Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara, a younger player of broadly similar profile.
Lining up a replacement while declining to extend the incumbent tends to point in one direction.
“Right now I am in the right club”
Mac Allister avoided turning any of it into a grievance.
“It’s really sad. We won a Premier League title together. We went through difficult times together. We will see what happens,” he said. “Of course there is still time, the fans don’t need to worry I will give 100% until my last day.”
He also backed new head coach Andoni Iraola without hesitation. “Definitely since I came to pre-season I worked under Andoni I could see something special,” he said. “I said before he is a really good coach, he knows very well what he wants to do. We are trying to get there.”
Mac Allister added that he has had no conversations with Iraola about his contract situation, and that the way the head coach wants the team to play is his reason for believing this remains the right place to be. Whether that shifts anything at ownership level is a different question entirely.
