Same bench, same man, three months later
Fiorentina announced late Monday that Paolo Vanoli is their new head coach. He knows the seat. It was taken off him in June to make room for Fabio Grosso.
“ACF Fiorentina announces that the technical leadership of the first team has been entrusted to Mr. Paolo Vanoli. We extend our sincere thanks to the coach for immediately and enthusiastically agreeing to take back the reins of the first team,” the club said.
Polite words for an admission that the summer decision was wrong.

Grosso lasted three games
Appointed on June 8, gone before September was out of its first week. Three Serie A matches, three defeats, bottom of the table. The 2006 World Cup winner leaves Florence with nothing to point at.
What makes it worse is the outlay. Foot Mercato put the Viola’s summer spending at 165 million euros. Spend that and you do not get until Christmas, apparently you do not even get until October.
Igor Tudor, Raffaele Palladino and Thiago Motta had all been floated over the weekend. Florence took the fastest option on the board.
He inherits somebody else’s squad
Bringing back a coach you fired three months ago, after three league games, is not something European clubs do often. It tells you how nervous things have got around this club.
Vanoli knows the dressing room, the club, the city. He does not know this roster, which was rebuilt over the summer for a different manager playing a different way. Serie A does not pause while he works that out.
An entire transfer window, three months of the season, and Fiorentina are back at the starting point.
