Blackburn Rovers vs Sheffield United: another Ewood Park showdown just 15 days later 
The two clubs already met on this same pitch in late August in the EFL Cup, and Sheffield United came out on top 2-1. Tuesday’s meeting brings the same stage back into play, only this time it counts in the league.
Kick-off for this sixth-round Championship clash is set for Tuesday 8 September at 19:45 UK time, 20:45 in France, at Ewood Park.
Blackburn sit 16th, Sheffield United 15th. One place separates two sides that have done little to split opinion in the table.
The Rovers are winless in three, with two defeats and a draw. The Blades just suffered their first loss of the season, a 3-1 home defeat to Norwich City.
History leans firmly one way. Blackburn have beaten Sheffield United only once in the last six meetings between the sides.
The early-season numbers tell a similar story. Sheffield United have drawn four of their opening five league games, while Blackburn have turned just one of theirs into three points.
Freshness will also matter, with both sides in action on Saturday and back again three days later. The key question is how much both managers are willing to shuffle their packs.
The maths is simple enough before kick-off: five points for Blackburn, six for Sheffield United after five games. One win would lift the victors into the top half.
Blackburn Rovers: an encouraging start that has started to fade 
Blackburn began the season in decent shape, with a hard-earned 2-2 draw at Wolverhampton followed by a 2-1 win over Middlesbrough. It has gone flat since then.
Since then, the Rovers lost 2-1 at home to Queens Park Rangers, drew 0-0 at Lincoln and went down 2-1 at Preston on Saturday. No wins in those three.
Saturday’s defeat stings in particular because Preston had not taken a point before that game. Tony Mowbray described the two goals his side conceded as “really soft”.
The manager added that his players had “never really reached the required level” in that Lancashire derby. The message is clear enough ahead of a home date with a side that already beat them here two weeks ago.
The injury list makes the rebuild harder. Harry Pickering, Scott Wharton, Lewis Miller, Moussa Baradji, Augustus Kargbo, Yuki Ohashi and Balazs Toth are all out.
Tom Atcheson is back from suspension after a one-match ban and returns to the centre of defence. Andri Gudjohnsen is expected to lead the line again.
That 0-0 at Lincoln remains the only game this season in which Blackburn have kept a clean sheet. It sums up the defensive mess at Ewood Park.
The schedule offers no mercy after the trip to Preston, with only three days to recover. Seven absentees leave Tony Mowbray short on options when it comes to rotation.
Andri Gudjohnsen remains the main focal point up front for a team that struggles to turn pressure into goals. Blackburn have scored more than once in only two of their five league games.

Sheffield United: four draws, one win and then the first wobble 
Sheffield United have built their start on solidity rather than flair. The Blades opened with a 0-0 draw against Birmingham City, then another 0-0 at Swansea.
The 2-2 draw at Cardiff City kept the run going before the Blades finally got moving in the win column. The 3-2 victory over Bolton Wanderers has been their only league win so far.
Saturday’s 3-1 home defeat to Norwich City brought that unbeaten run to an end. Chris Wilder called the three goals his side conceded “really poor”.
The manager felt his team “did not deserve to win” based on the performance. Tuesday’s trip therefore comes with a bit of soul-searching attached.
Patrick Bamford is the main threat in attack right now. The striker has scored or assisted in each of his last three league outings.
Femi Seriki, Harrison Burrows, Tahith Chong and Ryan One are among the Blades’ absentees. Kalvin Phillips could come in for Jairo Riedewald in midfield, a change already made at half-time against Norwich.
The trip to Ewood Park went Sheffield United’s way in late August, with that 2-1 win in the EFL Cup. Bamford and Tyrese Campbell are expected to lead the attack again.
The Blades’ style explains some of those four draws: three of their five matches have produced one goal or fewer. Their attacking output depends heavily on Bamford.
Tuesday’s trip comes just three days after the Norwich setback, with no real breather in between. Chris Wilder must decide whether to stick or twist with his starting XI.
